Fewer ‘aggressive’ Asian hornets during rainy season: NParks
Insect don't like the rain and are less active during this period as they stay dry in their nests
A good time for park-goers to enjoy the outdoors
Rainy season is a good time to visit your local park without worrying about getting stung by an Asian hornet. These insects hate the rain and are less active during this period as they stay dry in their nests.
The National Parks Board (NParks) said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Oct 18) that Asian hornets, scientifically known as Vespa velutina, are less aggressive during the rainy season, which typically lasts from November to January.
Their reduced activity is because they prefer to stay dry and warm in their nests during wet weather.
"Asian hornets are not as aggressive during the rainy season. This is because they are less active and more focused on staying dry and warm in their nests," an NParks spokesman told The Straits Times.
"As such, park-goers can enjoy the outdoors without being as concerned about getting stung."
However, NParks added that it is still important to be aware of your surroundings and to take precautions to avoid being stung.
"If you see an Asian hornet, do not disturb it and move away slowly," the spokesman said.
"You should also avoid wearing dark-coloured clothing and strong perfumes."
If you get stung, seek medical attention immediately.
Asian hornets are not native to Singapore and were first detected in the country in 2005.
They are known to be aggressive and their stings can be painful.
In 2021, there were 109 reported cases of people being stung by Asian hornets.
NParks said it is working to control the population of Asian hornets in Singapore.
The agency has set up traps and is also working with the public to identify and remove hornet nests.
